10 Things That Make Your Tinnitus Worse

Is your Tinnitus starting to bother you? First of all, let’s help you answer the question: is your Tinnitus permanent in nature. The easy answer to that question is that Tinnitus has a very good chance of being permanent or chronic in nature if it has lasted for a period of more than 2 weeks. The shorter the time Tinnitus lasts, the more temporary it is. But, even if your Tinnitus is permanent, chronic or long-term in nature, here are 10 things to do to keep your Tinnitus in check.

  1. Cigarettes – Cigarettes constrict blood flow and make it difficult for your ears to receive blood and nutrients supplied by blood
  2. Stress – High levels of stress and anxiety is a well-established Tinnitus trigger
  3. Insomnia – Improve your sleep even slightly and see how your Tinnitus eases away
  4. Salt – High salt intake increases blood pressure. This then makes the heart pump harder to send blood to all the organs. The ears receive the least amount of blood as they are not a vital organ when the body is in a compromised state
  5. Caffeine – Caffeine dehydrates you and also directly increases awareness of the nervous system. Both these effects can be detrimental to your Tinnitus
  6. Loud noise – Loud noise is severely damaging to the ears, especially if you have Tinnitus. If your ears ring even temporarily or once in a while, it is imperative that you protect yourself against loud noise by either wearing ear plugs or by simply avoiding noisy environments
  7. Not getting vitamins and minerals– Research has shown that vitamin B12, D and also iron, magnesium and calcium can all affect Tinnitus, sometimes to a great extent. Ensure that your diet is rich in these vitamins or minerals. If your diet can’t provide a healthy supply, consider taking supplements to ensure a proper functioning of your hearing
  8. Worrying about Tinnitus – If your Tinnitus doesn’t go away quickly, you must not try to fight it. Resisting it, worrying about it or questioning why you have Tinnitus will only increase stress and anxiety which can make your Tinnitus much worse than it usually is
  9. Keeping to yourself or being a loner – Tinnitus, especially the severe kind, can make people very lonely and fearful. Talk to a loved one about your vulnerability and you will see that you will be in a much better place when it comes to emotionally tackling a condition like Tinnitus
  10. Not seeing an audiologist – People refuse to see an audiologist when they have Tinnitus. They are unwilling to accept the fact that their hearing could be less than ideal. Please know that you can have partial hearing loss and not have a clue about it. Only an audiologist will be able to help you understand your hearing loss. In such cases, they will help you wear hearing aids that can not just restore your hearing, but also potentially help you get rid of your Tinnitus as well, if not at least lessen its intensity!
